Journey beneath the Waves on World Oceans Weekend

Join us and take a deep dive as we focus on marine sanctuaries, fish in the ocean, and plastics in the ocean.

June 7

  • 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
    • Educational/interactive booths featuring Texas Scuba Adventures, Sport Divers Houston, Moody Gardens and more (Free!)
    • Try scuba diving in a fun and easy environment with the Go Dive Now Pool. All that is required is a swimsuit – we provide the rest! (Free!)
  • 6:30 p.m.
    • Film screening of “A Plastic Ocean” in the MG 3D Theater. The film explores the challenges our oceans face with plastics that end up there. A Q&A panel discussion will follow the film as well as a reception with light refreshments and a cash bar. ($5 with proceeds benefiting the Moody Gardens Conservation Fund for ocean conservation.)

June 8

  • 8:30 a.m.
    • Penguin Yoga class led by instructor Margaret Johnson. Class begins with a warm welcome by one of our very own penguins before a yoga session. At the end of class each attendee will have the opportunity to take picture with a penguin. ($35 per person with proceeds benefitting the Moody Gardens Conservation Fund for threatened or endangered penguins in the wild.)
  • 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
    • Educational/interactive booths featuring Texas Scuba Adventures, Sport Divers Houston, Moody Gardens and more (Free!)

    • Film screening of “The Smog of the Sea.” The film explains how microplastics in the world’s oceans are affecting the marine food chain. (Free!)
  • Saturday evening concludes with speed painter, Ange Hilz, creating an ocean-themed piece of art to be auctioned off at a special event later this summer.

Nothing says “summer on Galveston Island” better than the 4th of July!  Don’t miss this wonderful evening with a glittering parade followed by a dazzling fireworks display over the Gulf!

Details
Coming up the evening of July 4, Galveston Island will celebrate its annual Independence Day with a parade featuring a procession of floats, decorated military vehicles and performers. The parade will kick off at 7 p.m. with a procession on Seawall Boulevard starting at 59th Street and ending at 25th Street.  After the parade, the island will host a 20-minute fireworks show over the Gulf of Mexico at 9:15 p.m. near 37th Street and Seawall Boulevard.

A community collaboration works each year to create The Galveston Marine Corp League Fourth of July Parade. The Marine Corp League, the City of Galveston and community volunteers who create this parade appreciate your support and participation.
