Everyone needs to take a break from life and enjoy a weekend away with friends, and there is no better place to do so than the yearly Celebrating Women: Mind, Body, Spirit Conference in Galveston.

The eighth annual event is celebrating women Texas Style this year with a bigger, better conference than ever before. An estimated 800 guests are expected to descend upon the Moody Gardens Convention Center on April 17, 2015, for a full day of professional and social networking.

The festivities kick off at 8:30 a.m. with a warm welcome from keynote speakers Amie and Jolie Sikes. The spunky sisters are the stars of “The Junk Gypsy” on the Great American Country Channel, an interior design show that follows the Round Top, Texas, family business that turns junk into treasures.

Nourish Your Brain and Body

Sponsored by the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce and UTMB Health, the conference offers professional development sessions and cutting-edge workshops on women’s health. New this year is the business development headquarters. The Galveston County Small Business Development Center plans to offer free consulting on sales, customers, financing and long-term planning.

UTMB physicians will lead discussions on choosing a healthier lifestyle and on timely topics, such as, “Teen Sexting, Cyberbullying and Other Trends in Social Media.” Dr. Jennifer Arnold, star of TLC’s “The Little Couple,” is slated as the featured speaker. Standing at 3-feet 2-inches tall, Dr. Arnold has a rare type of dwarfism. Surpassing all odds after more than 30 surgeries, she has achieved a well-deserved reputation as a leading neonatologist and pediatrician. She now serves as the medical director of the high-tech training center at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

Get Ready to Discover the Ice Age at Moody Gardens!

Explore the ancient wonders of nature at this unique resort hotel

Located in the bay area of Galveston, TX, Moody Gardens Hotel is a unique resort that features more than just your standard amenities. Its 242 landscaped acres house everything from an enclosed rainforest to a Giant Screen 3D theatre. The Discovery Pyramid plays host to a multitude of interesting exhibits. This year, Moody Gardens welcomes you and your family to Discover the Ice Age.

Exhibit Attractions
Designed to be an immersive experience, the Ice Age exhibit features life-size animatronic Megafauna—animals that lived during this unique period in history. You’ll see mammoths, saber-toothed cats, giant birds, bears and more along with cast skeletons to give you an idea of just how “mega” these creatures were.

Ice Age also includes information about Neanderthals, Cro Magnons and other “Ice People” that are theorized to have lived during this time. A Tar Pits gallery as well as a collection of extinction theories are also featured so you and your family get a full picture of what the Ice Age was like. Lifelike scenery contributes to the realism of the exhibit.

Inspiration and Design
Created by Imagine Exhibitions and Aurea Productions, the Ice Age exhibit owes its accuracy to Dr. Gregory M. Erickson. Professor Erickson is a leading expert on extinct mammalian biology and acted as both curator and advisor for the exhibit.

Making the Most of the Experience
To see Ice Age for yourself, head to the Galveston area and book a room at Moody. Make the exhibit the focus of at least one day of your stay. Walk through each gallery and pay attention to the information presented as you marvel at the stunning landscapes. Experience stages of the period in chronological order and be sure to ask your kids questions as you go. Spend some time in the Ice Return Gallery musing over the possibility of another age of ice descending on the world. Most of all, though, have fun!

At $14.95 for adults, $11.95 for seniors and $8.95 for kids, Ice Age is an affordable way to mix a little education into your next vacation.

When you’re ready to start your Ice Age experience, visit the Moody Gardens Hotel website to find just the right room for you and your family. If you need more information, feel free to give us a call and we’ll answer any questions you may have about the exhibit, hotel accommodations or the unique amenities we offer.

Moody Gardens Launches First Institutional Giant Screen 6P Laser Theater

The laser theater experience comes to this unique resort hotel in Galveston

Moody Gardens is known for a number of attractions spanning our 242-acre campus. To add to the lure, we’re about to launch the first-ever institutional giant screen 6P laser projection theater system.

In partnership with D3D Cinema, Christie Digital Systems, MDI and Infitec GmbH, Moody Gardens is proud to present this stunning new technology that will change the way you enjoy movies.

Laser Theater Technology

Thanks to advances in home theater systems, more people are beginning to enjoy the cinema experience at home rather than going to a movie theater. In response, the movie industry is looking for new ways to wow audiences. Laser projection is the latest development in the fast-growing world of cinema technology. Optimized for 3D films, laser projectors are meant to deliver a clearer, crisper picture that makes the movie experience more immersive and exciting.

The Laser Experience at Moody Gardens

Using a 6P laser illuminated 4K 3D dual projector provided by Christie Digital Systems, the Moody Gardens theater will show films on an 80-foot by 60-foot 1.4 gain premium white screen made by MDI. The equipment includes 4k laser projection heads and a 6P modular light farm with fiber-optic delivery to give filmgoers the ultimate cinema experience. 4k 3D high-bitrate IMBs and 90% efficient 6P glasses from Infitec add to the package. Together, the theater’s components deliver movies in a way that goes beyond the industry standards for “ultra-bright” screens. The result is unlike anything that can be found in a standard movie theater, even those with modern laser projectors.

The Future of Film?

This type of laser theater is new ground for the movies, but Moody Gardens is no stranger to testing out the latest technology. For years, the Galveston hotel has been working with D3D to present the latest in projection imagery. Though you’ll find laser projectors in other theaters, the 6P system at Moody is cutting edge. Even industry professionals are beginning to recognize the projector’s superiority for delivering an unforgettable movie experience.

To see this spectacular laser theater for yourself the next time you’re in the Galveston area, contact Moody Gardens for a reservation. Not only will you be able to experience movies with crystal-clear laser projection as you’ve never seen them before, but you’ll also have access to a wide array of other attractions found only at Moody Gardens. From the Aquarium Pyramid to the Moody Gardens Golf Course, there’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy.
